I have read some former posts about Grip progress bars only being a guess. there has been some work on pipe programs that given some parameters (e.g. input file size) transparently pass standard input to standard output and give progress indication on standard error. One such package is cpipe (http://cpipe.berlios.de), although the functionality is similar to the program movie-progress in the videotrans package (http://sourceforge.net/projects/videotrans). This could at least show how much of a .wav file has been passed to an encoder, provided that Grip can read and correctly interprest data on standard error.
