I just released libmtp 0.0.1 as a proof-of-concept thing.

This is based on Richard Low's sources, what I've done is basically 
port to Linux (should be platform-independent and run anywhere 
libusb is available really), then construct a library interface similar to 
libnjb (but with lessons learnt from libnjb) and added a few sample 
programs very similar to the stuff from libnjb, or more or less verbatim 
copied.

What works:
* detecting, including getting owner string and battery level
* sending tracks
* getting tracks
* deleteing tracks

TODO:
* regular files in both directions
* playlists
* setting owner name
* ...more

Richard: you'll not want to use this until I've ported all the stuff you 
already have in XNJB, but if you have spare time you could see if the 
stuff compiles on Mac and can run the samples...
