A file should be playable even if it's missing data from the end or
beginning. And it's not just about data corruption, e.g. one would like to
play a file while still downloading it and the end missing. Or like I do, I
split big AVIs into multiple CDs but mplayer can not play anything except
the first part directly (unless I've missed some switch).

MPEG certainly can do this (it has a special header into which one can
synchronize to).
