The answer is: 1) They might reduce their dependence of their chosen audio/video codecs with little or no cost. 2) If it works, they essentially establish themselves (currently) as *the* solution for any "alternative" (=non-proprietary) audio/video web platform. 3) Even if the performance improvements do not cater to audio or moving images, still image support (or image/signal processing) might still gain from it, enabling support for new applications.
