Don't mix up "commercial" and "proprietary". Many free software applications are developed commercially. That said, we definitely lose more freedom overall trying to keep the reference format encoder/decoder GPL-free or even LGPL-free as companies like Microsoft loathe releasing source code, much less actually sharing the same freedom they have.
