This paper should interest Lourens particularely : http://www.erc.msstate.edu/vail/pubs/2002/fowler05.pdf Another advantage of an approach like this occurred to me ... with "standard" transforms if you use them with HVS based coding with the subbands as the perceptual channels information will migrate between channels in subsequent frames because of aliasing, which is counterproductive. I think with the method used in the paper this can be avoided.
