YUV format

It appears that the internal YUV format used in the current Tarkin code uses the same number of bits for all three planes. I would like to be able to use the same YUV4MPEG2 format files that Ogg Theora uses. Since YUV12 and YUV420 only use 1/4 size planes for U and V, does that mean they must be upsampled to be usable by Tarkin? Is there a simpler way to make Tarkin use the existing format?
