Just out of curiosity, anyone has numbers as to how much people managed to
get out of an arithmetic coder on something like a SPHIT based encoded
image? I'm just currious to see how my simple context model holds up to a
full blown enthropy coder.

Its not so much just an entropy coder, but a way of modeling is an
inherent part of the method ... its compared to with a arithmetic coder
with a "popular" "adaptive fixed context bit-based model". The
advantage of his method that despite the better modelling (shown by
the compression) the computational complexity stays relatively low.
