crazy idea for encoding

Hello everybody!

This is my first time posting to the list so please be gentle with answers :-)

I've got an idea for encoding. I didn't find it (via searching) in the 
archives - though I may just have used the wrong words; please forgive me if 
that's been on the list before.


Generally we're displaying a 2d-image of 3d-things. So why not use that in the 
encode and try to find simple structures (such as a wall which can be 
outlined per color) and try to present them? So instead of compressing a 
object as what it seen it's encoded as a 3d-object with movement relative to 
the camera, a clipping area and a surface bitmap.

An example: (I'm not good as ascii-art - so please use your imagination)
Think of a head in front of a corridor. The corridor is seperated into 4 
surfaces via scanning the edges (which can be guessed using the shadows and 
colors). The head could be approximated as a distorted sphere (using a 
bumpmap) and every object could get a surface bitmap.
The head gets a clipping path so it doesn't obstruct the walls more than 
before encoding, and the movement of the head and the camera is recorded.
The window in one of the walls (which you couldn't know about yet as I've just 
invented it :-) is a image (jpeg or something other - you know better) which 
gets moved in 3d space as well.

So instead of calculating the 2d image the 3d sight is visualized.
I don't expect (or want) to encode the mountains in the back - they're mostly 
constant, after all, nor do I want to encode very complex structures which 
would take a lot of time to identify (but that's a policy concerning the 
ENCODER not the decoder).
Everything that can't easily be restricted to simple objects would have to 
persist as an image (or a movie in the movie :-)

I think that could save some bandwidth - instead of encoding mostly constant 
things they're only discribed and moved in space.

With CPU power going up I think this could reduce the amount of storage 
required, and it would certainly help for computer-generated movies as they 
just have to encode their data in another language.
