Yeah, it's just an intermediate step. Once we have the motion vector 
field for a whole sequence of frames we can do all sorts of fancy 
things with it. Use it to separate objects in the frame, 3D wavelet 
compress it, use predictive encoding, turn it inside-out and upside 
down, paint it in psychedelic colours, erm, well, whatever.

By the way, resampling to a lower resolution may also work well, and 
save a lot of processing. I'll give that a shot too.
