I would love it if there was a general media IO solution for PD that can read all kinds of file formats from all kinds of transports (file, web, etc). Could be optional at build time. I hadn't known that gavl/gmerlin is still being maintained. The website looks defunct. That's good news, I guess. I'm wondering if it would make more sense to depend on gstreamer, however. It will likely be more stable over time, not to mention more flexible.
