I took a crack at this the past few days and I've put a draft PR up here
in case it is useful to anybody.

It turns out it's not as simple as replacing instances of "black" and
"white". I think maybe tk uses black as a default so that might be
happening in some places explaining the strange behaviour I'm seeing.
