I agree that documentation should not output audio right away.

however, there's only a single example that does play audio as soon as 
the DSP is turned on, which is A01.sinewave.pd

this is the very first example for working with audio in Pd, and I can 
understand that the idea is to keep this as simple as possible - without 
any magic involved.
a consequence of the first objective is, that there is only a single 
button you have to interact with in order to produce sound.
this is the "turn DSP on" button.
a consequence of the 2nd objective is, that there's no convoluted 
subpatch that somehow raises the gain when its useful.

one possibility to keep the patch simple and still not produce any sound 
on start, would be to automatically turn *off* the DSP when opening the 
A01.sinewave.pd
would this be any better?
