Wow, Pd from the year 2000 still running!  Well, the last IRIX version 
of Pd was 0.34, from 2001:

It takes arguments to set number of channels, for instance:

pd -inchannels 8 -outchannels 8

... the maximum was 8.  I think it was necessary to specify the exact 
number of channels the interface
had because there was no way for Pd to open IRIX devices with fewer of 
them, so that opening an
8-channel device in stereo would have failed.  But I can't verify this, 
having no IRIX machine handy :)
