yes, it's still there (just not installed).

indeed, that would be the better solution.

as a sidenote, i couldn't even load the xpm within TclTk, not to speak 
of setting it as an icon.
but i think we could simply not try to set any icon, if we can detect 
that GIFs are not supported. (as in: those niche platforms can probably 
live without).

maybe wolfgang can shed some more light on what he actually had to do.
