Intermittent computer freezing

Intermittently, only while playing XMMS mp3s, my whole server (FreeBSD 
4.7-RELEASE) will stop everything (routing tcp/ip traffic, playing mp3s, 
etc) for a few seconds, then start up again.
I have been using the server to play MP3s while playing DaoC, but with the 
server not routing traffic every few minutes for a few seconds, it is 
becoming a major pain.

I saw someone had posted that once they installed EsounD and used that for 
the Output, it fixed his freezing problems, but if I install EsounD and use 
that for Output, I hear nothing at all through the speakers.
