There are some good people working on sprucing up the GTK file selector
(google will find the links to mockups). The current one is really bad,
except for that one feature you mentoion. I really like the feature, but
unfortunately it really DOES badly break the Tab-To-Move-Between-Widgets
behavior. I've not been able to think up a satisfactory way to
compromize between the two.

I have a feeling the new selector wont even try a compromize; it will be
out with the old standby and in with the new standard. Very sad.
