Never mind.  I obviously need to drink more caffeine or something.  I had
simply disabled the mp3 plugin when poking around with another problem
with output a week or so ago.  Interesting that these little preferences
bits survived my several re-installations. . .  Anyway, it's fixed, please
ignore me.
