  Two reasons, firstly this allows other programs to interact nicely
 with xmms, turning down the volume before running, etc.

  Secondly I seems suprising to me that other main options are
 available from the command line options and not the volume.

  I've seen a lot of programs that use the command line interface
 for controlling a running instance of XMMS for jukebox purposes
 etc.  I think the ability to adjust the volume also would be a 
 generally useful thing to do, and that's why I went to the effort
 to add it rather than just map the buttons.
