freq_data in visualisation plugins

Is there a description somewhere of what is contained in the freq_data 
array that gets passed to render_freq() in a visualisation plugin? 
Specifically, I want to know which element in the array corresponds to 
which frequency band and what the value of the element actually means 
(ie. is is logarithmic or linear and what is the range of values).
