I tried to install XMMS 1.2.10 on my Mandrake 10.0 box and it does not work. I cannot find any RPM for this version. MDK comes with XMMS 1.2.9 and it seems that the philosophty of the company is to make users wait for the 10.1 release to have the new version. I will have to remove all the Mandrake RPMs and recompile XMMS from source, but I find this methd quite bad since it bypasses the RPM installation system. It would be a great thing to have XMMS RPMS on the XMMS home page or at least links pointing to working Mandrake RPMs. I tried many things from the Mandrake side to get the XMMS packages and absolutely nothing works. Even though I am a member of their MandrakeClub, I still do not have access to the RPMs. Their URPMI system does not work because of a curl problem and no FTP mirror is working, I just get a blank page on my browser or permission denied error messages. Yesterday, I tried to build the RPMs myself, but the dependencies were wrong: xmms-1.2.10 was looking for the gtk+ package which does not exist on my Mandrake box: it is called libgtk+1.2! I had this problem repeatedly before (with Mozilla, for example, as well as with GNOME 2.6 which I simply cannot install). Is there a Linux distribution that would be more easily upgradable than Mandrake or should I investigate a solution to create RPMs with no dependencies (e.g., a command like tar which would create the RPM for me)? Thanks
