xmms and permission

hello,
I use debian unstable and xmms works fine if I am root, but as user
I can't read the tracks on the CD.
I tried to change the permission to 4755 instead 755 but I received a message
which asked me to read http://www.gtk.org/setuid.html

I understand that there are problems of security with gtk but how can the 
users run xmms in spite of it all ?

I am not a user of the list and if you think that my question worth a reply
