Enhanced Streaming

Hi folks,
In my situation at home I've developed a website on my server so that
I can stream music to my desktops/laptops (sure.. everyone's done
this).. I simply download a m3u file to mozilla which spawns xmms and
the m3u contains an http link(s) back to the real file.

But it's really annoying that I cannot seek in the stream when the file
is playing in xmms.

Is xmms capable of actually buffering the whole file (as fast as it can
or settably so) while it's still playing so that seeking around is
possible? Is there a plugin for this already? Is the plugin API
extensible enough to make this possible (without rewriting a majority of
what's already built in)? If so I might be willing to work on one.

I could understand that such a method of streaming would at first seem
really network intensive as opposed to streaming it only as fast as
necessary.. but really, if you've listened to the whole file by the time
it's finished, you've transmitted the same amount of data. Anyhow, I
would imaging public servers that allow streaming would limit the upload
rate per stream to prevent the behavior I've described above if they
needed to.

I just know that even Windows Media Player when told a URL to play,
begins playing as soon as it can, but is all the while downloading the
whole file, making seeking possible.

And if xmms should already be doing this, please suggest why I have no
thingy on the seek bar to grab while I'm playing music from my server.

Thanks much,
   Davy
