I had the problem with xmms too, that it used too much cpu usage with 2.6 kernels (compared to a 2.4 kernel). I don't know what eventually solved my problems, but you should try the following. 1) Try the patchset for the 2.6 kernels from Con Kolivas http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/ 2) If you intend to use your system solely with 2.6 kernels, make sure that your system (glibc) uses the NPTL thread system. Google around for this issue, I don't know that the status of FC[34] with this issue is. If you're currently not using NPTL you will have to recompile at least glibc and xmms.
