the patch didn't help the matter, sorry :/

xmms displays this on play;

Couldn't open audio
Please check that:
Your soundcard is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the soundcard

xine is perfectly able to use alsa, I have selected the alsa output
plugin, and no program is blocking (emu10k1 has a nice hardware mixer even)
