Thanks for the hint, I was unaware of the existans of xmmspipe (*1*). Seems to do pritty much what I want, though I think these features should be a _standard_ part of xmms. Plugins make the whole thing a lot more modular of course, but it usually requires more user intervention as well... Keeping that in mind, at least I'm of the opinion that many if xmmspipe's features would sit pretty well in the standard setup.
