I don't know of openoffice but:

Be aware of some changes when switching from 3.x to 4.1 our whole
application broke because of some changes in MySQL the upgrade from 3.x
e.g. when using UNIONs, ... .

The best thing about MySQL 4.1 is it's UNICODE support which has been
improved and of course the long wanted feature of subqueries.
