Nowadays, it only allows you to use a platform/installation/machine-independent name for a database. This might, for instance, be useful if you have a mail merge document which should be used on different machines, or on the same machine on different platforms. Assume that this documents works with an database document. This would normally mean you have to adjust the path to the database document every time you work with the mail merge document - quite laborious. If you register the database document under a certain name (once in every installation), you can simply base the mail merge document on the registered name, and from then on, transparently work with the mail merge document in all installations. (Now for the sad news: In practice, not all applications have migrated all their database-integration functionality to work with both database documents and registered names. Sometimes, they only allow for the latter, sometimes they automatically register the database for you.)
