Hmm. The only idea I have is that you might have used the database
somewhere in the other applications (mail merge? Calc's data pilot?),
and those did not properly release it. Very rough guess, admittedly.

Restarting OOo (don't forget to close the quickstarter if you're on
Windows, so OOo is *really* re-started) doesn't solve the problem either?
