OOo crashes when connecting to MySQL/HSQLDB via JDBC.

On Windows 2KPro I have:
   OOo 2.0.1
   Java 1.5.0_06
   MySQL 4.1.18 and 5.0.18
   MySQL Connector(J) 3.1.12
   HSQLDB 1.8.0.1

I can create and query databases and tables normally with both MySQL and
HSQLDB using either their respective front-end applications or with a
Java program using either MySQL Connector(J) or the HSQLDB jar.

MySQL
Whenever I use OOo Base to connect to any MySQL database using
MySQL/JDBC or JDBC directly, OOo crashes. This happens when I either
test the connection in the Database Wizard or hit the Table button in
Base (after entering Login Name and Password).

HSQLDB
I can use OOo to open an externally created HSQLDB database and I can
see any previously created tables, but Design View for any table does
not list any fields. If I create a new table with fields, after I save,
close, and re-open it, the fields are no longer displayed even though
the table and fields are entered into the HSQLDB database file.
When I open any table, I can see any previously created rows, but I
cannot enter any new rows or edit any fields. The Form Wizard for any
table displays the error "The field names from table <table name> could
not be retrieved".

I do not see any other messages here about these problems, and
everything else about both these databases, JDBC, and OOo works just
fine. Can anyone give me an ideas as to what is going wrong here?
