Example applications are as much a marketing tool as a tutorial.

( OK, you con open your ears...and here is a different 'M' word )

Motivation.

Alright, why? The marketing part should be fairly self-explanatory. It 
really can be looked at as a an interactive feature list. ( see the 
reference Tom sent regarding Eclipse for a great example of this ) Just 
as in a printed version of the same, one cannot hit every feature - but 
it should hit each major category and as much of the details of these as 
possible. But an example should not just be geared towards the techie 
types that will need to use a grid, or a list box - take the opportunity 
to give that techie fellow something they can show the boss.

The second part, motivation, is not so clear perhaps. This is what I 
mean by it. A person gets a copy of OpenOffice and starts to build a 
database with it. They can't get the form to do what they want it to do 
- give up or invest the time to learn this new package? For many folks 
they will give up, unless they can see that it can be done.

These two points aren't further argument for creating an example 
application, but rather for what type of application. 

So - anyone have a suggestion for the example scenario?
