Slow HSQL database

Hy users,
i have  a problem with a database of 26 mb and a table of 142000 record.
It's quite impossible to work with it every database operation require a 
lot of time.
Can someone give me suggestion for this matter?
It's better a different database like postgres or mysql?
26 mb is not a big database... isn't it?
