MySQL 5.1.45 Error code: 2002

Running MySQL 5.1.45 and OpenOffice 3.2.0 on a Linux x86_64 system. I am
getting this error message trying to connect to the local database:

SQL Status: HY000
Error code: 2002

Can't connect to local MySQL server through socket '/tmp/mysql.sock' (2)

Any help would be appreciated.
