to get to know OOo internals and specific efforts to extend OOo.   I
recomend you to subscribe to [email protected].  You can learn to
build OOo and other tasks that are helpful to understand your way around the
application.

However if bug squashing is your strategy then go to
http://qa.openoffice.org

There are many ways you can contribute.
