I think (and this is a personal opinion not related to my present 
employer or their customer) that .dmg is the way to go.  I've worked 
with NeoOffice/J and it uses the .dmg format.

Of course, I realize that this is not an election, but installing 
through .tar.gz is a real pain on the MacIntosh platform.
