I used the following command after creating a directory to put the child 
workspace into:

export (setenv for tcsh) 
CVSROOT=:pserver:[email protected]:/cvs

cvs login
(supply anoncvs to the password: prompt)

cvs -z3 checkout -r cws_srx645_macxjoin1153 OpenOffice

It will take a little time to get the entire child work space.

Individually patch each sub directory into a CVS checkout of
