Also, I thought persons in this position were appointed by a comittee and not by a vote of those belonging or participating (as I am) to the porting team.

According our guidelines 
(http://www.openoffice.org/dev_docs/guidelines.html) it is not necessary 
to go through a voting process but I'm sure Eric will enjoy common 
consent :)
