Is there any reason for --with-gnu-patch=/bin/patch and --with-gnu-cp=/bin/cp ?

Hmm, looks OK for me and the link problem is fixed.

I have no clue ATM. Did you do a clean build? (Means removing
everything and starting from scratch?)

Yes, that were 1.9.x builds, and the real problem was never identified
but otherwise I have no ideas.
