It's not just "annoyance". html is /vastly/ bigger than the corresponding straight text file and chews up link bandwidth, mailer bandwidth and disk space (I've seen one-liner emails with megabytes of pretty "paper" attached, the originator being quite unaware of what they were doing). And because it's more complex to decipher, it's correspondingly less secure (so decent MUAs have yet another html render program to make sure they don't use the insecure system-provided one) and it's harder to detect and chuck spam. It just seems so unutterably pointless. IMO of course.
