Hi Alan, Shoshannah, Jonathon,
There is not way to convert an arbitrary date between calendars in Writer.
In Writer you can do the following to convert the current date:

1. Insert->Fields->Date
2. Double-left-click on the date to open the date format dialog box
3. Scroll to bottom of the formats
4. double-click on additional formats opens the additional date format
dialog box
5. Select desired language

Note that calendar system is linked with the concept of language in OOo.
There is no concept of a Hebrew date in any of the English locales, e.g.
17th Tevet 5735.

In Calc you can convert arbitrary dates because cells are typed data.
Enter arbirtart dates in some cells. Select a cell, then use the
Format->Cell function to select the language and format for the date.
Regards,

  - yba
