Hi Elazar,

In the case of f(x), after you type f, (, x, and ), click on the LRM 
button in the toolbar.
You can also type Shift-F3 instead of pressing the LRM button.
This feature is not available in the distributed version, but only in 
the TkOS version, available at http://www.openoffice.org.il
