thanks for the information. As we don't own our server, (we rent it from
a hosting association being part of the french FOSS community) I need
lots of input on this so that we can check out how feasible this would
be. 
We may, from Ars Aperta's side, want to reduce the complexity of these
things, not so much because of money but because of the complexity
underlying such a service.

For instance, it would help us greatly if the set of permissions for
users on the server was clear and made simple.

How much space would be needed grossly?
