Further testing:
1. 10.04 installed & updated. Ubuntu version of OOo is:
OpenOffice.org 3.2.0
OOO32m12 (Build:9483)

2. Tested autosave in the same maner as my previous post: works.

3. Installed the ppa version from:
https://launchpad.net/~openoffice-pkgs/+archive/ppa
$ sudo add-apt-repostory ppa:openoffice-pkgs/ppa
$ sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get upgrade
The problem is that doesn't jive with your install. Instead it installs:
OpenOffice.org 3.2.1
OOO320m19 (Build:9505)
ooo-build 3.2.1.4, Ubuntu package 1:3.2.1-5ubuntu3~ppa1

So I'll need to download 3.2.1-7ubuntu1.1 from another source...
tomorrow. BTW: autobackup on 3.2.1-5ubuntu3~ppa1 works.
