can I convert word files??

I recently downloaded Open Office. I have some files from word which were created in work (using tables and calendars). I have tried to edit these files with Open Office. But I do not seem able to do this. Can I do this and i so how. I am afraid that I need to recrreate these files in open office. Do I have to do this?
