It was Word 2003, no docx files.  I ended up sending him text files with 
my translations and he keyed them into Word.  It was finished in 2009.

If he wasn't open to learning Open Office, I'm pretty sure he wouldn't 
be open to learning LaTex or Tex.  I gave it a shot once, but gave up 
pretty quick.
