How to merge the versions of two Writer documents?

I have a Writer document that I have been editing for a few years (CV). A few months ago I branched a new document from it to try out a new layout. I like the new layout and wish to merge the two documents, so that all the versions from the original document show in the versions in the current document. How to merge them? The new document was in fact a _new_ document, not a Save As from the original.
