Font defaults to red for printing

Using OpenOffice 3.3.0 on Linux Ubuntu 10.04. It seems that all documents in Writer are defaulting to a red font. I.E. - the 'Font Color' icon on the toolbar is always set on red, and if we forget to reset it to black and print we deep in red ink - so to speak. How can this be corrected?
