When I open the document in OpenOffice it's either blank or have 95% of the text missing. It seems somehow that everything written in Times New Roman has disappeared into thin air. Stuff written in other fonts shows up, but only about half of the times I open the document.

I assume that you are using a MacOSX version. It is likely that MS Office changed your font configuration.

What fonts do you have in ~/Library/Fonts Disabled/ and ~/Library/Fonts/ ?

I suspect that you'll find a "Times New Roman" in your "Fonts Disabled" folder.

If so then close all applications and then move that font from "Fonts Disabled" to "Fonts" and use OpenOffice.org to open your essay.

Let us know if that works.
