data base questions

I am a complete and total nebbish when it come to data bases......

I would like a simple data base, consisting of 5 columns (lets say columns A-E).  No more, no less, with infiite number of records going into it.   

I could pull it up on any one column, to see where we are.   A search feature would be good for column A .   I could search it to see if any other records were to this group.

My big problem is there is a ton of stuff when I start to go into Data Base;  for to many things for me to be able to judge.   Is there any kind of FAQ or guideline which would help me on this project?
