Working with Database Date fields

I have a simple question about how to work with the dababase component of OpenOffice.

When using date fields, how do you get a date field to allow the entry and display of the full parts of a date entry: ie date/month/century & year.  I am able to define against a table field the formatting, but it does not come across on a form constructor.  As I enter data, the century part can be entered but when I tab from it just disappears. How can I make it remain so that the century part of a date can be entered, preserved and displayed?
